I hope you didn’t miss me awfully–after Ox Bow on Friday, the 1st, we spent the rest of the holiday weekend visiting with Matt’s friends and family and, you know, generally enjoying ourselves. Our hostess has had this family/friends gathering for 36 years called the Barbarian Picnic, and really made me feel welcome and a part of the group, even though it was my first time and a guest of an invitee. It was a lovely way to spend the 4th and understand how quickly we can find a community among others. I don’t have any photos from this, since it was a private/family event, but thanks Hesselschwerdts! Y’all were quite delightful.
Now, onwards!
Our first stop out of Grand Rapids was to swing by Hollander’s Book and Paper store in Ann Arbor, MI.
It didn’t have quite as much book arts stuff as I was hoping, but I didn’t get an opportunity to take a workshop, which we all know is where the real magic happens. Still, Hollander’s was some of the first bookbinding supplies I’ve ever purchased, so it was nice stopping by and seeing them in person.
We also wandered around Ann Arbor a bit, finding this neat cube thing that spun with very little effort.
Then we continued onto Detroit, where I was promptly very surprised to realize Canada was on the other side. (seriously you guys, I had no idea!)
We pulled up to the Hostel Detroit, which I don’t have a photo of yet but it is wicked cute! The volunteers here are very welcoming and knew we were showing up ahead of time. (Awwh!)
Then we wandered around in the area, finding lots of interesting art everywhere.
And now we’re about to go meet one of my classmate’s friends, who is going to show us community gardens around the area. :D
Seeya!
